Warner has been named captain in place of Kane Williamson. In 2016, the Sunrisers team, under the captaincy of Warner, captured the title.
Sunrisers Hyderabad have appointed David Warner as their captain for the Indian Premier League 2020 starting on 29 March. He will replace Kane Williamson. Williamson captained the team in 2018 and 2019. Williamson was named the team captain in 2018 when Warner was banned from the season following a ball tampering controversy.
Under Williamson's captaincy, Sunrisers Hyderabad traveled to the finals of 2018. Here he suffered a defeat at the hands of Chennai Super Kings. Williamson scored the highest, 735 runs in that tournament. Last year, the Sunrisers lost in the Eliminator to the Delhi Capitals. She finished fourth in the league. Warner had previously captained the team between 2015-2017. In 2016 Sunrisers won the title. Warner has captained 45 matches for the Sunrisers overall and has won 26 of them. Williamson has won 14 of 26 matche

David Warner thanked the team management after being handed the captaincy. In a video released on the team's official Instagram account, Warner said, 'I am very happy to be the captain. I thank the team management. Warner thanked Kane Williamson and Bhuvneshwar Kumar, saying that they both captained the team well. He said, 'Both of you commanded the team very well, I will need your support very much.'
